Work/Life Balance: A Top Priority

A healthy work/life balance is vitally important to those currently employed and those seeking prospective jobs
  • 53% of employees say a role that allows them to have greater work-life balance and better personal well-being is “very important” to them. (Source: Gallup State of the Workplace poll)
  • After an attractive salary and long-term job security, employees rank “good work-life balance” as an important attribute in gauging the attractiveness of an organization. (Source: Randstad Employer Brand Research Report)
  • Another survey found that work-life balance won out over both salary and flexible schedule as the most important factor when evaluating a job prospect. This was consistent among people who are parents and those who aren’t. (Source: FlexJobs Survey)

A healthy work/life balance leads to higher employee satisfaction, productivity and retention.

  • The Corporate Executive Board found that employees work 21% harder when they feel they have adequate work/life balance and are 33% more likely to stay.
  • In contrast: 54% of Americans don’t use their full vacation time, typically due to work/life balance challenges.
  • These challenges also lead to increased absenteeism, averaging 6 days each year per employee and costing U.S. businesses $80 billion annually. Health care expenditures are 50% higher for workers who report a high level of stress.

Employers Must Do More

Only 23% of employers feel that they are “Excellent” in helping employees balance personal and professional work/life demands. (Source: Deloitte Global Human Capital Trends)

  • And although companies have improved their efforts and programs, the Hay group found that more than 25% of employees at organizations who perceived no support for work/life balance plan to leave their employers within the next two years. (Note the emphasis on perceived. Assessing employees’ perceptions on a regular basis is critical).

The High Cost of an Unsafe Workplace

In the U.S., a worker is injured on the job every 7 seconds!
  • The estimated cost of non-fatal injuries averages over $1 Billion per week
  • Overexertion is among the highest contributors to non-fatal workplace injuries

A Simple Training Approach to Improving Workplace Safety

  • Part I: Hazard Recognition. Build employees’ visual literacy in identifying potential hazards. Simple activities can be the most misleading.
  • Part II: Slips, Trips and Falls: the #1 cause of workplace fatalities. Help employees instill meticulous jobsite “housekeeping” practices and provide them with the right equipment (such as slip resistant footwear).
  • Part III: Fatigue. Educate employees on the importance of adequate sleep, nutrition and provide resources to help with work/life balance.
  • Part IV: Impairment. The most common incidences are related to substance abuse. Provide confidentiality, resources and support to help employees who may be struggling.
  • Part V: Commitment: Have all of your employees take the National Safety Council’s “Safe At Work” Pledge, and acknowledge their commitment with a certificate:

I pledge to:

  • Never compromise my own safety or the safety of my co-workers to get the job done
  • Actively look for hazards, promptly report them, and take appropriate action to warn others
  • Be a good safety role model for my friends and family even when off the job

Spotlight on Hoffer Plastics and BBC Cellpack: A 100% Sustainable Pouch

cell-pouchHoffer Plastics is proud to have partnered with BBC Cellpack to create a breakthrough innovation in flexible pouch packaging for the European market. CELLPouch is a state-of-the-art stand-up pouch that’s 100% recyclable. It was designed to meet the European Commission's strict requirements, whereby all plastic packaging on the EU market must be recyclable by 2030. Every element of the packaging is recyclable: the printed laminate film as well as the closure cap can be disposed of with the household recyclable materials and re-purposed for other uses. The technology used to produce CELLPouch has been proven to reduce carbon emissions and enables processing of recyclable, biodegradeable nanomaterials.
In addition to being 100% recyclable, CELLPouch also offers substantial benefits for consumers. Its superior film barrier protects against oxygen and water vapor damage, and can withstand hot filled products. This helps ensure superior product quality and safety, as does its child proof safety cap. The laminate material used in forming the pouch can be customized in terms of colors, printing and branding, and the various sizes available can accommodate variations in the caps and closures. It’s an exciting, sustainable packaging solution for a wide range of food, beverage, personal care and household products.
“We were honored to work with the BBC Cellpack Team on this truly breakthrough sustainable innovation”, says Alex Hoffer, Vice President of Business Development for Hoffer Plastics. “We’re excited about the opportunity to co-create products that bring substantial benefits to the environment and consumers.” The collective Hoffer/Cellpack Team looks forward to bringing CELLPouch to Europe and other consumers around the globe.

Need to Improve your Innovation Capabilities? Here are Three Simple Enablers*

  1. Willingness to Change: do the right thing for the project or the company, unbound by conventions
  2. Not settling for “Good Enough”: relentlessly seek ways to raise the bar; embrace “restless dissatisfaction”
  3. Assembling an Innovative Community: lead and instill a climate of mutual trust, collaboration, and learning
…and keep working on that pet idea or project you’re passionate about. Chances are, it can solve a problem, fill a void and maybe even change the world!

In comes March – and with it, March Madness, Daylight Savings Time, St. Patrick’s Day and the start of Spring.

Within all this excitement humbly lies National Consumer Protection Week. This month, we we focus on the importance of continuous innovation to keep products, and people, safe.

Spotlight on Hoffer Plastics: High Speed Lining for Signature Drop-Lok™ Closures

drop-lok-38mm

Drop-Lok

Hoffer Plastics Corporation continues to lead the way in packaging and closure innovation. One of the newest capabilities is a High Speed Lining machine for the company’s signature Drop-Lok™ closures. Drop-Lok™ closures were designed for a wide range of rigid and flexible pouch packaging configurations across many diverse industries. The closure features a traditional one motion, twist off design, comes in sizes ranging from 20mm to 48mm in diameter, and is available in many different types of resin.

In many Drop-Lok™ applications, a lined cap is a key element, providing a crucial barrier for product integrity, quality, shelf life and most importantly: safety. Hoffer’s new High Speed Lining machine takes this important feature to the next level. Beyond just improving line speeds, the equipment delivers a more consistent, high quality lined closure, which means increased efficiencies for customers. But what it ultimately means is a better, safer product experience for consumers and their families.
“We’re excited about the new improved capabilities the High Speed Lining equipment can deliver for our customers and consumers”,  said James Harris, Director of Engineering. “When you can deliver improved efficiencies for customers with improved product quality and safety, it’s really a homerun.”

Injuries, deaths and property damage related to consumer product safety incidents cost the U.S. $800 Billion a year.

Fun Facts about Caps & Liners

  • Glass bottle caps and liners were invented by William Painter and patented in 1892. His original "crown" metal cap, designed to prevent leakage, is still in wide use today
  • Cap liners were originally made of cork, but evolved to synthetic materials as cork became more scarce.
  • Threaded twist-off caps came into play in the 1960's, as cork scarcity continued.
  • You can visit the Bottle Cap Museum, located in Grayling, Michigan.

This February, we celebrate National Engineering Week
and American Heart Month

Spotlight on Engineering Innovation:

Hoffer Plastics Tether Lok™ Closure

The Hoffer Engineering team played a key role in developing and successfully launching an innovative new closure for flexible pouch packaging. Tether Lok™ is a one piece spout and cap fitment, ready to be installed on horizontal form, fill and seal pouches. The real benefit is for the end user: the tethered, flip-top design is self closing—so it's perfect for on-the-go usage for busy, active families. "It was a challenge to design and produce a closure that could deliver outstanding seal integrity while being compatible with customers' preformed pouches and equipment", says James Harris, Director of Engineering. "We went through many rounds of raw material sourcing, design iterations, prototyping and in-line testing before we had it right. We love a challenge, especially when it brings real benefits to our customers and to the end users of their products."
The tethered top eliminates the frustration of lost or misplaced caps, product spillage and waste. It also reduces the potential for product safety and spoilage issues. “Tether Lok™ represents a real advancement in convenience, product quality and product safety and environmental sustainability”, says Alex Hoffer, Vice President of Sales and Operations. “In applications from baby food to functional beverages to condiments, consumers will love that they can open, enjoy, and easily re-close the product with one hand." And with a self attached tethered cap, less plastic enters the environment. Tether Lok™ is molded using a proprietary resin that offers excellent sealing properties, multiple color options, and is also environmentally friendly.

Heart Health: A U.S. Priority

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) including stroke, remains the #1 cause of death for American men and women.
  • It’s linked to over 800,000 U.S. deaths annually, equaling:
  • 2,300 Americans dying every day, or one death every 38 seconds
  • Costing over $320 Billion in care and related expenses
Sources: American Heart Association; ODPHP

Manage the Controllable Risks, Reduce the Disease

CVD can be controlled and dramatically reduced by addressing: High blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, diet, physical inactivity and obesity.
That’s easier said than done for many. Medical innovations and devices have helped those who struggle, thanks to advances in mechanical and biomedical engineering.

Engineering Healthier Hearts: Exciting Progress

We can thank physicians and engineers for the early innovations in heart disease treatment including stents, balloon catheters, pacemakers, defibrillators.
Progress has continued with implantable defrillators, drug eluting stents, and percutaneous valve replacements (done without open chest surgery).
Scientists, physicians, and engineers are excited about the next breakthroughs in treatment which include:
  • the use of stem cells introduced directly into the heart muscle to impact response
  • engineering novel nanomaterials that could directly target key immune cells, aid diagnostic imaging and more precise delivery of treatments.

With January centered on resolutions and renewal, we focus this month’s issue on the benefits of thinking ahead: proactive capital reinvestment and planning.

An ounce of prevention and forward thinking

Proactive vs. Reactive Planning and Capital Investment:
  • Mitigates risk for you and your customers. It improves performance quality & consistency, reliability, and helps maintain a sustainable competitive advantage
  • Enables diversification and innovation, if linked to a strong, overarching company vision and mission
  • Saves costs, both in the short and longer term
  • Set targets, measure, capture and report returns and benefits to the company and its customers on a regular basis.
  • Paves the way for future investors and investments. Signals health and a commitment to growth.
  • Benefits the local and broader community through growth and job creation.
  • Enabled by sound financial management and stability

Spotlight on Hoffer Plastics Corporation

Sixty five years ago, the founder of Hoffer Plastics Corporation—Robert Hoffer—embodied the notion of proactive capital investment and planning. He had the vision and conviction (along with sound financial management) to invest in an onsite power co-generation plantat Hoffer headquarters.
This enables Hoffer to continue to operate in the event of local power outages or emergencies and if need be, to:
  • Provide back-up power to help the local community!
  • Hoffer Plastics has a solid, 65 year legacy of financial stability, which is the real key in enabling an ongoing commitment to capital reinvestment and improvements.
Traditionally, Hoffer Plastics closes down during the last week of December, for the express purpose of renovation, repair and reinvestment. The company just completed installing three new injection molding presses that will provide customers with faster cycle times, increased overall efficiencies, and substantial cost savings.
Hoffer’s proactive tooling maintenance and repair capabilities save customers millions of dollars annually.

In the midst of the holidays, with buffets, mail-order food gifts and shared meals abounding, it’s the opportune time to focus on food safety.

A Complex, Challenging Issue with Serious Consequences

Global sourcing and supply chains have made it extremely tough to consistently ensure food safety, from ingredient composition to production to distribution and handling.

  • More touchpoints = more opportunity for contamination and mishandling.
  • In the U.S., there are 300,000 ambulatory visits related to foodborne illnesses every year.
  • Worldwide, one in ten people fall ill from foodborne diseases annually. There are 420,000 related annual deaths worldwide; 125,000 of them are children.
  • Issues related to food allergies represent yet another complicated area related to food safety.
  • Food safety impacts the economy. Beyond the cost of health related issues, losses in exports, tourism and the livelihoods of food service workers have a high societal cost.

The Good News: Prevention is Possible!

Foodborne illnesses are largely preventable, but require a coordinated effort from global to local organizations, ongoing training, education and diligence from the source to the end consumer.

  • Packaging and labeling are crucial! Packaging closures that provide sanitary, airtight seals at the point of filling are one example of effective prevention.
  • Hoffer Plastics Corporation is an innovator and leader in this area, with its line of Trust-T-Lok™ closures for food and beverage products including yogurt and applesauce. The company has integrated tamper evident cues (visual and audio) as well as an air-tight plug seal designed for food safety purposes, into many of its closure designs.
  • Labeling that’s clear and easy to read—yet detailed—is critical. From the point of packaging to shipment, storage, preparation and consumption, labels are the most important means of communication and prevention. Since labeling is voluntary in most geographies, food service personnel and consumers have to be extremely diligent and vigilant.
  • Providing allergic substance information on labels, easy-to-read dating, multi-lingual options and a customer hot line are effective and necessary.

For November, the month of Thanksgiving, it’s all about gratitude, with a special Veteran’s Day shout out to all who’ve served.

Inspirations from Hoffer Plastics: How a Small Company Leads in Gratitude

“Service” is a core company value at Hoffer. It manifests in outstanding customer service, but also in fostering a “servant’s heart” leadership model throughout the company.

  • Co-workers write personal “thank you” notes to each other, acknowledging their contributions, help and support.
  • “Rings of Recognition” and monthly “Star Performers” celebrate, acknowledge and reward outstanding employees (nominated by their co-workers) who’ve gone above and beyond their everyday jobs to deliver for the company and for others.
  • Hoffer employees are encouraged to participate in the many company sponsored community service programs (such as Habitat for Humanity, the United Way, Boys and Girls Clubs and the local Food Pantry) through flexible work schedules and dedicated service days.

Gratitude Leads to Happier, More Productive Employees

What’s the #1 reason why people leave their jobs? They don’t feel appreciated.

  • 81% of people would work harder for a grateful boss
  • 88% of people say that expressing gratitude toward colleagues makes them feel happier and more fulfilled
  • Many psychological studies have proven and quantified the impact that gratitude has on employee productivity
And Yet:
  • Only 10% of people who express gratitude at work make it a daily habit
  • 60% of people rarely or never express gratitude at work!
It’s So Easy . . . Simple Ways to Build and Foster a Grateful Workplace
  • Say “Thank You” frequently—and mean it!
  • Keep a gratitude journal and share it with others—especially those you’d like to thank—and:
    • Write “thank you” notes or emails
  • Acknowledge and celebrate together as a company. Gratitude has a multiplier effect!
    • Start a “Wall of Gratitude” —physical or online—for all to post and contribute to
  • Make a mental note to thank every Veteran you come into contact with. It will make their day.

Hoffer Spotlight Q&A

Tom Devans, Veteran and Director of Supply Chain Management

How did you land at Hoffer and what has been your journey to your current position?

I came to Hoffer following a layoff at a large retail toy company in the mid 90’s. Hoffer was looking for a Customer Service position so I sent them a resume. I didn’t know anything about the company at the time but I knew I could do the job based on the ad. I received a call back for an interview. I remember commenting to my wife after the interview that I really wanted to work at this company. They came across as honest, fair, and loyal to their employees.

Needless to say, I ended up getting the job. One of the things that I learned quickly about Hoffer was that if you want more responsibility, you need to communicate the want and be ready when the opportunity presents itself. In a few years I moved from Customer Service, to Project Management, to Logistics, Purchasing, Materials and finally into my current position as Dir. Of Supply Chain Management.

From your time serving, what are some core skills you’ve taken with you into the workplace?

Integrity above all else - Integrity to others and to one’s self

Being able to work thru adversity to get the job done right

Teamwork matters. Everyone needs to be on the same page and moving in the same direction. Whether you’re the leader or the newbie, goals need to be shared.

If you could share some advice with Veterans applying for jobs, what would it be?

Be open minded to opportunities. The skills that were learned in the military provide a strong foundation that employers want. The ability to communicate. The ability to function as part of a team. The ability to work a problem to get to a shared goal. Use what you have to shape what you want.
